The psychological benefits of working with clay

In a world that's more and more performative, working with clay can be quite meditative. Whether you throw or hand build, it's a wonderfully versatile material for artistic expression.

Creating itself is therapeutic. When you zone out, your cortisol levels drop and you feel your mood lift. People who often enter a state of flow have heightened creativity and a sense of well being since it makes you lose the perception of time or the perception of judgement from others. It is when you have complete mental clarity.

Anything tactile is grounding and great for your nervous system.

When you're in touch with natural materials, you build spatial awareness and dexterity. Physical activity, routine and purpose are also known to reduce anxiety.

Learning a new skill is known to build neuroplasticity by constantly engaging multiple senses and problem solving. Building on concepts is like a mental workout. When you start diving deeper or pay attention to detail, it expands your analytical skills and enhances retention.

Surrounding yourself with aesthetically pleasing objects can feel calming because of the release of dopamine in the brain's reward center. The mind relaxes in what is perceived as a comfortable environment.

You almost immediately become part of a wider community of potters. Hobbies are the best way to kick start social networking and meet like minded people. You may even come across collaborative opportunities or connect with potters on your travels. If you're curious about local traditions, it's a great way to learn about their heritage. That itself opens the doorway to a bigger picture.

As you progress, every little achievement will boost your confidence.

As your muscle memory grows, you get ready to take up bigger challenges.

Spiritually, it will teach you humility, patience and to let go of a controlled outcome. You'll also gain resilience and the courage to start over when things go awry. And most importantly, detachment when you part with anything you make.

Your personality will show through your work. Not only does clay have memory, it also holds memory. Whether you were rushing or were careful, being clumsy or intentional, it will reflect in your pieces. It's almost like visual journaling, where you can learn from past mistakes and improve yourself.
