Failure an Inspiration: The Courage to Begin Again

When Your Pot Breaks

When your pot breaks, it feels like a small heartbreak. You’ve spent hours, maybe days, molding, shaping, and perfecting it with your hands, investing not just effort but a part of yourself into its creation. So when that pot shatters, it’s hard not to feel the sting of loss. It’s as if something valuable and meaningful has slipped through your fingers, leaving behind broken pieces and a void where your work once stood.

But as painful as that moment may be, it teaches an important lesson: you have to move on. Just as in life, when something you care about breaks, you can’t stay stuck in that moment of loss forever. You can mourn, feel sad, or even frustrated, but there comes a point where you must pick up the pieces—literally or figuratively—and begin again.

Destruction as a Part of Renewal

Destruction isn’t always negative—it’s a necessary part of renewal. Without destruction, there would be no space for new things to emerge. Just as old leaves fall to make way for fresh buds in nature, broken moments in life clear the path for new opportunities, ideas, and experiences.

When your pot breaks, you can choose to dwell on what’s lost, or you can see it as an opening to create something new, perhaps something even better. That is the essence of life: nothing is ever permanent, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s a reminder that clinging to the past or mourning for too long can keep you from seeing the potential of what could come next.

The Beauty of Broken Pieces

In pottery, the broken pieces can sometimes be gathered and reformed into something else. In Kintsugi, for instance, the cracks are filled with gold, highlighting the break rather than hiding it, making the piece more beautiful for having been broken.

What Kintsugi Teaches Us

This philosophy applies to life as well. Our scars, failures, and broken moments can add to our character and strength if we allow ourselves to embrace them.

That’s the true beauty of life: it’s not just about the things you make, but about how you rise, rebuild, and create again, over and over.

A Personal Reflection

As I have written to motivate myself, when my pot breaks and I get frustrated, so to overcome this sadness and gather courage to again start making a new pot with the same motivation is really what this pottery teaches us — PATIENCE
